Former Haldane Standout Shines in the Sunshine State
Cold Spring native Bill Carufe, who graduated from Haldane in 1980 and was an All-League basketball standout for the Blue Devils, has recently taken the Community School of Naples, Florida boys basketball team to the state final four, where they were narrowly defeated, 51-41, by Arlington Country Day school of Jacksonville.
Arlington, which went on to win the Class 2A state title (equivalent to New York State's Class C) for the fourth consecutive year, is a major basketball power in Florida whose average margin of victory this year was 31 points. Carufe's team was within 3 points with less than a minute to go in the state semifinal.
Carufe, who is also the Community School's athletic director, took over a program that was a perennial also-ran six years ago and has compiled a 125-37 record since then. The Seahawks have won four district titles, a regional title, and this year made the school's first trip ever to the Florida State Final Four.
