Putnam Valley High School TheatreWorks Production of West Side Story Debuts at PVHS Performing Arts Center
Putnam Valley's all-student theater production company, PVHS TheatreWorks, is proud to present West Side Story, with performances on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 11, 12, and 13, with performances at 8pm on Friday and Saturday, and 2pm on Sunday. Gerard Micera is the Director.
Based on Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, the PVHS 2008 Spring Musical production of West Side Story is arguably one of the most wellknown works of American musical theater. With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the musical explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, set on the streets of Manhattan's Upper West Side.
The story centers around Tony, the former leader of the white gang, the "Jets," and Maria, sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang, the "Sharks." The two young lovers are caught in a battle of culture, allegiance, and emotions, twisted within an environment of gang warfare.
Many consider West Side Story to be a "family show," however there are some violent moments parents should be made aware of, including gang combat scenes.
Tickets are just $5 for all performances, and are available by calling the Performing Arts Center at 845-526-7847, extension 1369.
A free, special Senior Citizens Only presentation will be held at 3pm on Thursday, April 10, 2008, with a complete dress rehearsal performance followed by a complimentary dinner for all audience members, sponsored by PVHS TheatreWorks and The Putnam Valley High School Make A Difference Club. For details, please call the Performing Arts Center at 526-7847, extension 1369.
