The Mighty Theater Collaborates on Mythology Plays With 6th Graders at the Garrison School
Parents, students, teachers and staff were invited to a real treat on February 29, 2008, as the 6th graders at the Garrison School performed the plays Demeter and Persephone and Speed: The Story of Atalanta. These exciting and thrilling plays were a result of many long hours of practice. Under the direction of Mr. Berger, Middle School Language Arts teacher and Alison Mitchel, director from the Mighty Theater, at the Paramount Theater in Peekskill, the 6th graders worked to prepare their lines, design costumes and produce a theatrical performance that was indeed first rate. This creation tied into the Greek mythology unit the students were studying.
The purpose of the Mighty Theater experience is to produce works that are smart, inventive and challenging and instill within children the desire to perform, giving them a sense of self. Another goal is to help the children learn about theater and raise awareness about the history of theater. A third goal is to develop strong commitments to the community, while promoting drama awareness.
As the students worked to develop these goals, it was clear that they enjoyed this experience and were fascinated by their ability to work together and produce a play that was truly remarkable. The theme this year at the Garrison School, Celebrating Learning Through the Arts was supported by the classroom objectives. The students were clearly happy to work together to promote drama and theater in the classroom. The smiles on all indicated that this play was a success and captured the goals of the district, as they implemented theater into the classroom.
Congratulations to all the 6th graders at the Garrison School.
