Music and Art Enhance Haldane's Foreign Language Immersion Weekend at Taconic Center
On Friday, March 8, 2008, fifty-seven Haldane High School students were immersed in Spanish and French language and culture at the Taconic Outdoor Education Center. The foreign language "Immersion Project" has become one of the most anticipated events at Haldane High School. At the education center, students are involved in lecture, as well as interactive activities that incorporate foreign art, music, cuisine, and dance.
Haldane's language department has been orchestrating this event for students for more than a decade. Over the last several years, the Haldane School Foundation and the Haldane Board of Education have provided funding to fully support the program.
This year, students heard from Garrison resident Josephine Monter, a friend of Haldane and a Spaniard, Chanthou Oeur, a Cambodian artist who survived the Khmer Rouge and lives in the Washington D.C. area, and Sarah Cagianese, the daughter of Eva Cagianese, Haldane French teacher. Sarah has lived and studied in both France and French- speaking Africa. Students were introduced to French Gypsy jazz by the Django Reihardt band and Latino salsa dancing and Latin music with Taller Latino from Manhattan. Parent David Loeb, also a local artist, introduced students to his personal French experience as well as his artwork while Turizzo, a Colombian artist living in Kent, NY created personal art projects with students. A wonderful time was had by all.
