Awakening the Familiar: The Still-Lifes of Terry Wise at M.J. ART
Recent Paintings and Collage by Terry Wise of Stockbridge, MA, will be on exhibit at M.J. ART in Beacon, Saturday, April 12, through Saturday, June 7.
The mark of Terry Wise's work is her ability to take on familiar, everyday objects and surroundings and impart them with deliberate and vibrant, new life through her passionate use of color and texture. Ms. Wise's still-life subjects and interior spaces are self-willed, grounded, and categorically spirited.
"The magic begins as I take a palette knife and mix the luscious, thick oil paints into new colors. My imagery is realism set loose; the influences are artists such as Vuillard, Bonnard, Richard Diebenkorn. The beauty of color, texture, pattern, rough edges, or an odd viewpoint can infuse the familiarity of my subject matter with vibrancy and aliveness. Still life and interior views are my means of exploring composition, a sense of place and emotional content," said Terry Wise.
With a BFA in Textile Design, and fascinated with the "energy and celebration" she finds in beautiful images, Ms. Wise has been painting for 15 years, combining her interest in patterns and printmaking. Some of her favorite experiments consist of applying block printing directly onto the painting surface, and creating collage imagery by using handprinted papers.
Ms. Wise's most recent exhibits include the 31st Annual Small Works Show, New York University, New York, NY; Albany Center Galleries, Albany, NY and an ongoing representation at Lauren Fine Art, in Housatonic, Massachusetts. Her first show in Beacon opens Saturday, April 12, at M.J. ART, 177 Main Street, with an artist's reception from 4 to 6pm. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday, 12-6pm and by appointment.
