Teen Drumming Circle at Howland Library

Students grades 6 through 10 are invited to experience a hands-on drumming circle workshop with professional percussionist, Jeff Haynes at Howland Public Library on Wednesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 17 from 2:30- 4:30pm. During "Warm Hands- Warm Hearts", teens will gather to receive instruction on developing rhythmic patterns, playing within a group, and exploring various sounds and tones on the drum. Then on Friday, April 18 from 10:30-noon the students will share their learning experience through handson drumming with senior citizens in a special interactive performance in the library. While the teens are receiving instruction, they will also be planning their final performance to their senior neighbors, and gain an understanding of how they can contribute to the community through the arts. This exchange will not only bridge the generation gap but will also offer the teens and seniors an opportunity to enjoy the freedom of expressing their inner rhythms by "warming their hands" while "warming their hearts."

Jeff Haynes (www.jeffhaynesmusic.com) toured and recorded extensively with Cassandra Wilson, for 15 years. He has toured with the Pat Metheny Group, Al Jarreau, Boney James, Yolanda Adams, Lizz Wright, Harry Belafonte, Dionne Farris and Peabo Bryson. Haynes has recorded on over a 100 CDs with recording credits ranging from prominent names in R&B, Jazz, World Beat-to New Age. Haynes now shares his expertise, knowledge, and enjoyment of music with the community by collaborating with Hudson Valley schools and libraries to do workshops and performances, and is the featured percussionist in Mount Saint Mary College's Percussive Journey Through Genres of Music 2007- 08 monthly concert series.

Howland Public Library in Beacon is the appreciative recipient of an Ann and Abe Effron Fund grant received through the Community Foundation of Dutchess County in order to partially fund this event for students. To register or for information about this program or other youth programming, please contact Ginny Figlia at 845-831-1134, ex.103. Students are urged to take advantage of this wonderful community opportunity during Spring Break.
