Furuya Trio, Sisters, Will Open Chapel's Music Series Season
Three talented sisters, violinist Harumi Furuya, cellist Mimi Furuya and pianist Sakiko Furuya, will open the new season of Chapel of Our Lady Restoration's music series in a program of Mendelssohn and Schubert on April 20. The Sunday afternoon concert begins at 4pm, and admission is free.
Each sister was a child prodigy, with Harumi beginning her studies at age 2, and Mimi and Sakiko making their respective debuts at age 8. Each has performed in the great concert halls of the United States and Europe.
Harumi Furuya has made solo, chamber and orchestral appearances at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City, Dvorak Hall, Prague, Liszt Academy, Budapest, and at the Royal British Legion in Cambridge and Westminster Abbey in London. After graduating from The Juilliard School Pre-College, she continued violin studies alongside her academic studies, receiving a degree with highest honors in history from Harvard University, a master's in European Studies from University of Cambridge where she was Harvard's Paul Williams Scholar at Emmanuel College, John Harvard's alma mater, and a Ph.D. in government from Harvard.
Mimi Furuya made her debut as cello soloist with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta in 1988 to outstanding reviews. Capturing prizes in competitions too numerous to mention, she has appeared in Alice Tully Hall, has toured in Europe, and has participated in summer festivals in the United States and abroad. Mimi is also a prizewinning composer, whose chamber music and orchestral works have been performed by Juilliard orchestras and by the American Brass Quintet. She has a Pre-College diploma from Juilliard, where she studied for eight years, and a bachelor of music degree from Eastman School of Music. She also studied at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Sakiko Furuya has delighted audiences with her virtuosity ever since her recital debut in California in 1984. She has given more than thirty concerts in Europe and has performed widely in the United States, including in New York City's Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully and Merkin Concert Hall. She was a featured artist on WQXR radio's Young Artists Showcase and in The New York Times. Sakiko graduated from Juilliard, where she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees, and did further studies at the Mozarteum and the University of Salzburg in Austria.
The chapel is located at 45 Market Street, Cold Spring, and free parking is available on weekends at the adjacent Metro North Train Station. The music series is made possible, in part, with public funds from New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered in Putnam County by Putnam Arts Council. Individual contributions are welcome.
