Hudson Valley Bounty: Impressionist Orchards and Vineyards - Solo Show of Paintings by Christine Debrosky at Locust Grove

Locust Grove was the nineteenth century country estate of Samuel Morse, the artist, founder of the National Academy of Design, and the inventor of the telegraph and Morse code. In the twentieth century, the estate was owned by Poughkeepsie's prominent Young family, noted collectors of Hudson River School of Art paintings and the founders of the museum at Locust Grove. In honor of the site's rich history in the visual arts, Locust Grove is proud to host solo shows by contemporary artists whose work reflects this style of artwork. Hudson Valley Bounty: Impressionists Orchards and Vineyards, Paintings by Christine Debrsoky, will be the opening show of Locust Grove's 2008 season. The exhibit is on view May 1st through June 8, 2008.

"The Hudson Valley is home to the first apple trees planted in this country, and also boasts the oldest vineyards. I have found that no matter what other artistic avenues I may explore, I return again and again to our famed orchards. As a native of the area, I delight in the nuances of the day's light, and marked change of seasons. As an artist I find the planned geometry, and mosaic of form and color irresistible. Since I've been working with this subject (for over 25 years). I have sadly noted the demise of many of the Old orchards. More often than not, they have given way for development, or sometimes simply abandoned. I've been fortunate to have painted some before the loss. On a more positive note, I've added vineyards to the exploration of the subject, and am delighted that there are numerous new plantings in the area. To have the opportunity to present a body of work dealing exclusively with this beloved subject is a great pleasure." Christine Debrosky

Locust Grove is located at 2683 South Road (Route 9) in Poughkeepsie, just 2 miles south of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. Museum hours are 10am- 5pm daily.
