DEP Offers April Interpretive Wetland Walk in Putnam County
New York City Department of Environmental Protection staff will lead an exploration of the spring wetland on the Dean Pond Unit and adjacent New York City Water Supply lands in the town of Kent in Putnam County on Saturday, April 5. Join Wetlands Specialist Maria Tupper-Goebel and Land Manager Lori DiLorenzo on a hike in the meadows and woods of the Dean Pond Unit to learn about wetland plants and animals, and the role of wetlands in water supply protection.
The Dean Pond Unit, purchased by NYCDEP for water supply protection in 1999, is near the headwaters of the West Branch Reservoir of the New York City Water Supply, and is open year-round to the general public for hiking, hunting and fishing by NYCDEP permit. Nearly 75,000 acres of Water Supply lands and waters are available to the public for certain low-impact recreational uses. For information on Water Supply recreation opportunities and permits, visit the NYCDEP website at www.nyc.gov/dep.
Each year NYCDEP participates in educational events to promote understanding of source water protection, conservation, and watershed stewardship among water consumers, watershed residents, and recreational visitors to Water Supply lands and reservoirs. These include interpretive bus tours of the watershed showcasing open space landscapes that surround Water Supply reservoirs, school and youth group educational programs, and professional training on watershed protection science and technologies. NYCDEP also supports a variety of watershed stewardship education and outreach programs in collaboration with local partners such as the Watershed Agricultural Council, Catskill Watershed Corporation, Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, Cornell Cooperative Extension, county Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and others.
The wetland walk will depart at 10am from the parking area on Horsepound Road, located about 2.3 miles from the intersection of Horsepound Road and Route 52. Heavy rain Saturday morning will cancel the hike. Participants should be prepared for wet conditions and off-trail hiking. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended. For more information please call Lori DiLorenzo at 845-225-8144 or e-mail her at ldilorenzo@dep.nyc.gov.
