Cornell University Agricultural Outreach & Education Celebrates Agricultural Literacy Day
Established in 1985 as a partnership between Cornell University, the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, the NYS Education Department, and the New York Farm Bureau, New York Ag in the Classroom (NYAITC) educates youth, teachers, and consumers by promoting the understanding and appreciation of agriculture and the food and fiber system. New York Agriculture in the Classroom is pleased to announce its annual New York Ag Literacy Day. Less than 2% of our population actually produces food on farms, while over 20% of our nation's workforce is in some way, shape, or form involved in the processing, marketing, distribution, and sales of food and fiber products. And yet, little is taught in our schools about agriculture and the total food and fiber system. One of NYAITC's objectives is to fill this void.
On April 8, volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders. Students will also benefit from hands-on lessons and receive follow up activities. The book is then given to the school library with a bookplate recognizing the donor and NY Ag Literacy Day. More than 1,200 books were donated last year while thousands of second graders participated in fun and educational activities.
This year, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County's Master Gardener Volunteers and members of the 4-H Teen Action Group read the book, Sugarbush Spring by Marsha Wilson Chall while being taped at Comcast studio by the 4-H Tecno Teens. In addition to the possibility of having volunteers come to the participating school to read directly to the second graders, this tape is available to teachers for use that day.
Anyone interested in being part of this statewide program is encouraged to contact their local elementary school and Cornell Cooperative Extension Putnam County at 845-278- 6738.
