Sheriff Announces Participation in "Operation Safe Stop" Program to enforce school bus passing regulations
The Putnam County Sheriff's Department will participate in the statewide Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day on Wednesday, April 2, 2008.
Operation Safe Stop is a program during which police officers will be on board school buses and in marked and unmarked patrol units on selected bus routes that have a history of illegal passing complaints. Sheriff's Deputies will be issuing traffic summonses to drivers who pass stopped school busses in violation of Section 1174 of the New York State Traffic Law, which mandates that all motorists shall stop for a stopped school bus that has its flashing red lights activated during the picking up or discharging of passengers. The first-time fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus is a fine of $250, five points on your driving record, and/or possibly 15 days in jail.
If you have any questions about Operation Safe Stop, please contact the Putnam County Sheriff's Department at 225-4300.
