Congratulates PC Legislature for their Support of Equity in Education Act Dear Editor:
I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Putnam County Legislature for their Resolution supporting Assemblyman Kevin Cahill's "Equity in Education Act" (A04746). While there are many proposed short-term fixes to relieve New Yorkers from the crushing burden of the school funding portion of our property tax bills; caps, stop-gaps and "circuit breakers", only Mr. Cahill's bill resolves the problem once and for all by moving education funding to a sensible graduated income tax and away from property taxes. One may hope the support shown by a Republican Legislative body for a Democrat bill in Albany will give our State Legislature the political will it has lacked to solve this problem, not with politically palatable half-way measures, but with a bold, permanent, step.
Under the current system, if your income should decrease your property tax bill does not, thus forcing many people, seniors, those who become ill or injured, those on fixed incomes and those between jobs, to choose between losing their homes to delinquent taxes and feeding themselves and their families. Many are simply moving away.
Kudos to Putnam Valley Legislator Sam Oliverio for proposing the resolution, to Vic Tiship of Kent Cliffs for his tireless efforts to the cause, to the readers of PlanPutnam for their activism, and to everyone across the Empire State who feel that equity is essential not only to the manner in which we tax ourselves but to how we pay for the education of up and coming generations of New Yorkers.
