P.L.A.Y. Highlander Lacrosse Renews its Annual Rite
The 12th P.L.A.Y. Lacrosse Pot-Luck Dinner was held March 8 at the Garrison Fish and Game Club. The familycentered dinner is an annual rite in Philipstown's local sports culture. It welcomes the youngest Highlander Lacrosse players and parents along with players and families who've been involved in P.L.A.Y. (Philipstown Lacrosse Association for Youth) for many years.
Commencing with grace for our blessings and for the "Creator's Game", followed by exceptional food from lacrosse moms and dads, the audience was treated to an array of presentations. Getting old business out of the way the talk moved on to PLAY's requirements of fun, realistic expectations and high standards. This was followed by the introduction of PLAY's newest coaches, Brian Kelly, Chuck Twoguns and Mark Driscoll. They were introduced along with eight current coaches.
After dinner, the first speaker gave an eye witness account of how the world's largest lacrosse rebounder came to be constructed on the Garrison School field; the crowd then learned how the rebounder was constructed by Michael Bean, Frank Fusco, Jeff Dain and Tino Yannitelli Welding; everyone was regaled by legendary coach Gerry Walsh and his talk on Hudson Valley lacrosse history, with particular note of how highly regarded the Highlanders are within the region. Within this region, there are 70+ high school players at 5 high schools playing this game.
Finally the audience cheered appropriately when long-term Highlander coaches, Bob Freeman and Rick Mekeel received the 2006 and 2007 "Highlander Award" for outstanding service to Philipstown's youngest members.
The highlight of the evening is the raffle of a couple thousand of dollars of lacrosse equipment. Donated gear, shirts, sticks, helmets were provided by Dain's Lumber, Ozone Electric, Sports Barn, and Gerry Walsh who donated a full week at an overnight lacrosse camp at Univ of Mass.
