North Highlands Engine Company Handles Chimney Fire at Residence on Route 9
On Monday, March 24 at 2:24pm, North Highlands Engine Company was dispatched for a chimney fire at 3389 Route 9. Upon arrival chief Nolen confirmed a chimney fire from a wood stove. The first due engine arrived a few minutes later and started an initial attack laying hose in case the fire advanced, starting the house on fire. With smoke reported on the second floor, mutual aid from Dutchess County with one engine from Rombout and one tanker from Hughsonville was called.
Upon futher investigation the fire was contained to the stove chimney. The fire was extinguished and all the piping was removed, eliminating all fire hazard. Creosote from the wood built up in the chimney, blocking the fire draft.
James Copeland, a member of the Garrison Fire Department who was passing by at the time of the incident called it in to Putnam 911 and notified the home owner to get out of the house. If it had not been for him there might have been a lot more damage done. North Highlands was back in service at 3:28pm.
