Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Announces More TV Shows in "Speak Out" Series on Property Taxes and How Schools are Funded
Assemblywoman Sandy Galef's practical approach to the bleak economic forecast includes this interactive series of interviews with experts that offer a wide range of perspectives on the current property tax crisis facing Westchester and Putnam County. The shows, which kicked off in March, will continue to appear on cable TV through October.
In April, Al DelBello Chairman of the Westchester County Association gives a business perspective on how rising property taxes impact the economy and the county. Robert Elliott, Deputy Secretary of State for Local Governments and former Mayor of Croton discusses how school districts and municipalities can share services to cut overhead and increase efficiencies, airing in May. In June, Galef speaks with Putnam/ Northern Westchester BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Jim Langlois about BOCES role in sharing services and how it might be expanded to help cut costs on a larger scale.
"The complexities of how we fund our schools are great," states Galef. "It's critical that the taxpayers understand the nuances of moving to a different system of funding before we make a change. Also, it's important for us to look at ways to save money and reduce expenses. Just changing where we get the money from is not going to be a silver bullet." Galef also serves as Chairperson of the Assembly Committee on Real Property Taxation.
