Get Involved in Promoting Reading by Participating in Haldane's PTA's Parents As Reading Partners (PARP)
Parents as Reading Partners (PARP), a K-5 program sponsored by Haldane PTA and a grant from Target, encourages families to share the joys of reading together through literacy based activities and special events. The program, Reading: A Healthy Choice, open to all Haldane elementary school children and their families, started on March 31 and runs through April 18. Families pledge to read together for 15 minutes each day for the duration of the program and to keep a log of what they have read. Each child who enrolls receives a free grade-appropriate book and is eligible for exciting raffle prizes, including Tuxedo Ridge ski passes for four; a free dance class at Hudson Valley Dance Studio in Cold Spring; free passes for four to Poughkeepsie Children's Museum; an Ugly Doll from Country Goose in Cold Spring; a "Life Is Good" T-shirt from Hudson Valley Outfitters in Cold Spring and more!
This year's program kicked off with Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) on Monday, March 31. The entire Philipstown community was invited to join Haldane students and administrators, local preschools, day care centers, businesses and government officials, to take a 30-minute reading break.
On Friday, April 4, the Julia L. Butterfield Memorial Library will host a Pajama Reading Party at 6:30pm. Children may come in pajamas to listen to stories read by parents and other volunteers. Bring along a favorite bedtime story to share.
During Author's and Illustrator's Week, April 7-11, renowned authors and illustrators are scheduled to visit each grade. This enormously talented group includes author, musician and singer-songwriter Pete Seeger; author Jean Marzollo; author and illustrator Iza Trapani; author Beth Kimmel; sports reporter Ken Schacht; cartoon editor Chris Duffy; and author and illustrator Edward Miller.
Magician and ventriloquist Steve Charney will perform "Reading and Good Health" for Kindergarten-2nd grade on Friday, April 11.
The program concludes with an Ice Cream Party on Friday, April 18 in the Haldane Cafeteria for all who participated. There will be reading-based games to entertain and challenge all grade levels.
The Haldane PTA PARP program is funded in part by a grant from Target.
