Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program Explores Spring's Bounty Three Private Westchester Gardens

On Sunday, May 4, 2008, visit three private gardens in Westchester County for selfguided tours, through The Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program.

The May 4 Open Day includes an opportunity to visit Rocky Hills - The Garden of William & Henriette Suhr (95 Old Roaring Brook Road, Mount Kisco, 12 to 4pm), a Preservation Project of The Garden Conservancy. The Conservancy holds a conservation easement on the property's fourteen acres of rolling hills and gracious waves of azaleas, forget-me-knots, tree peonies and ferns.

New to the program this year is the garden of Shobha Vanchiswar & Murali Mani (76 Castle Road, Chappaqua, 10am to 4pm), an organically-maintained, award-winning property with many European touches such as arbors, window boxes, a Belgian espalier of fruit trees, a checkerboard garden, and a canopied dining area. A portion of the admission proceeds for these two gardens will directly support The Garden Conservancy's efforts to preserve Rocky Hills.

Additionally, garden lovers can once again explore the Steinhardt Garden (433 Croton Lake Road, Mount Kisco, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), a fifty-five acre estate with highlights that include thousands of plant varieties, fruit orchards, more than 350 Japanese maple cultivars, exotic waterfowl that inhabit the many ponds, and some unusual animals that roam the generous fields and hillsides.

The Open Days Program includes a total of twenty-two private gardens in Westchester County that will be open to the public from spring through fall. Admission to each private garden is $5, Open Days are rain or shine, and no reservations are required. Call 1-888-842- 2442, or visit www.opendavsprogram.org for more information.
