Haldane High Schoolers Made The Music Man Shine
To the Editor:

The short run of this year's Haldane High School musical ended on Sunday, and those who missed seeing "The Music Man" missed something very special. The production, directed and choreographed by Meredith Nocton, with musical direction by Martha Mechalakos, did more than justice to this classic of the American musical theatre. The directors and their wonderful cast made it shine, with songs beautifully sung and danced, convincing characters hilariously and touchingly wellacted, and an energy and enthusiasm that won the heart of the audience.

It's worth noting that theatre at Haldane has, in the past, been relegated to a very minor, very extra-curricular role in the life of the school, with pride-ofplace going to testing, grades, and of course, sports. Yet theatre has much to offer the education- the leading out- of the whole person, including that essential human faculty, the imagination.

Let's hope the work of Ms. Nocton and Ms. Mechalakos will be recognized and rewarded with more support from the Haldane school board- for example, with a budget line for theatre. Then, who knows, maybe our children, or more likely our grandchildren, will be given a real performing arts space, a real theatre, in which to thrill us.
