April is Organ Donor Awareness Month To the Editor:
April is the month dedicated to telling people about the importance of organ donation. Currently there are approximately 95,000 people waiting for transplants. Everyday more names are added and everyday people will die waiting. People do not have to die. We have the technology. We have facilities nearby with professional medical staff that can do the transplants. But people are dying because we do not have the donors.
You have the ability to save eight lives. Your donation can restore sight to a child who has never seen her mother's face; it offers a second chance at life to a person whose heart is failing. Your bone marrow may save the life of a person stricken with leukemia. The donation of a kidney will bring relief to a person who must depend on a machine to exist from week to week. The list goes on. You have the power to give the greatest gift of all, life. Please consider signing a donor card. A signed card means that when you leave this world, you will leave it as a hero.
