PARP Authors and Illustrators Week at Haldane April 7-11
This week, Haldane elementary school students have a unique opportunity to meet an award-winning group of writers and illustrators representing a wide variety of genres, as part of Haldane PTA's Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Writers and Illustrators Week.
PARP is a national PTAsponsored program to encourage reading among elementary school children. Writers and Illustrators Week was created to offer Haldane K-5 students first-hand experience with these professionals.
The week kicked off on Monday, April 7. Jean Marzollo and Iza Trapani visited the 1st grade and Kindergarten, respectively. Marzollo is the author of over 100 books, including the best-selling I Spy books and the Shanna Show books. Recent books she has both written and illustrated are David and Goliath (Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Award and a Sydney Taylor Notable Book) and Ten Little Eggs (BabyZone Best Counting Book). Iza Trapani has adapted and illustrated many favorite childhood rhymes and tunes. Her books Itsy Bitsy Spider and I'm A Little Teapot were ABA "Picks of the List."
On April 8, legendary musician, songwriter and author Pete Seeger made a presentation on American History to grades 3- 5. Seeger, whose many honors include the American National Medal of the Arts, is also the author of Abiyoyo; and Pete Seeger's Storytelling Book by Pete Seeger and Paul Dubois Jacobs.
On April 9, Chris Duffy, a cartoonist and editor of the comics section at Nickelodeon Magazine will share his work with the 3rd grade and demonstrate the wonders of 3-D cartoons. Also on Wednesday, author Elizabeth Cody Kimmel visits the 2nd grade. Kimmel is the author of many books for young adults and children. Recent picture books are The Top Job and My Penguin Osbert.
The 5th grade will enjoy a special interactive presentation by sports reporter Kent Schacht on April 10. Schacht, who traveled to Torino, Italy, to report on the 2006 winter Olympics for msnbc.com, will share his experiences with the children and allow them to practice their own interviewing skills.
On Friday, April 11, students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade will be treated to a presentation by magician and ventriloquist Steve Charney, entitled "Reading and Good Health." Charney has performed nationally for over twenty years. He's written songs for the national television show The Bear in the Blue House and has been a commentator for NPR. His latest book is Kids' Kookiest Riddles. Also on Friday, the 4th grade will enjoy a visit from author and illustrator Edward Miller. Miller's delightful books for children include The Monster Health Book (a Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of the Year); Elf Elementary and Captain Barnacle's Aquarium. He's illustrated dozens of other books for children.
