Makes You Wonder, Doesn't It?
Dear Editor:
Recently, I purchased a jacket with the brand name St. John’s Bay. Although it conjured up images of our neighbor to the north, I figured it was made in China or India, perhaps the Philippines. When I got home and looked inside, I found the label, Made in Vietnam.
It’s been thirty-three years since Saigon fell and that last helicopter lifted off from the roof of the American Embassy. Today we do business with Vietnam. Americans wander the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. President Bush stopped by on a Southeast Asian tour. Much has changed.
Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? All that death and destruction. What was it all about? Was it worth it? Where will we be thirty-three years from now? Will we be doing business with Iraq and Iran? (We already are!) Will American tourists be shopping in downtown Tehran? Will a future president be shaking hands and posing with leaders of Iraq, Iran and North Korea?
All that death and destruction. Makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Looking forward to 1/20/09.
