P.V. Laxmen Get Game in Gear, Lady Blue Devils Lose 1st Big Diamond Test
by Ray Gallagher

Putnam Valley's Kyle Calabro (15) scored two goals and dished an assist in the Tigers' win over Fox Lane Saturday.
It's a known fact that Putnam Valley's Dillon Chesnut can score goals. His 14 tallies rank him third in Section 1. What Fox Lane found out the hard way is that Chesnut can feed and finish, as the junior led the Tigers with five assists in their 13-7 victory over the visiting Foxes (0-4) Saturday.

Putnam Valley (2-4), which brokers out of Section 1's power league, broke open a close game with seven fourth-quarter goals, turning a 6-5 game through three periods into a full-blown rout down the stretch. Tiger middie Jimmy Van De Veerdonk notched the first hat trick of his career, spoiling Fox Lane's comeback bid. Fox Lane's Bobby Ahrens matched him goal-for-goal, bagging his own hat trick, but the Fox Lane poles could not thwart the Tigers in the final quarter. Josh Horner scored twice for the Foxes, who scored just twice in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Kyle Calabro, Dan O'Gorman and Ryan Morelock each scored twice for the Tigers, who seem to be getting their act together. Ryan Fitzgerald, who can crank it pretty good for a soph, Shane Kelly and Mike Mondeli registered a goal each for Putnam Valley while Pat Johnson, Joe Corsi and George Lodge did likewise for the Foxes. I had no idea Calabro, a junior, could quarterback the attack like he did. His play behind the cage was quite impressive and his ride technique was strong. Still, I'm not sold the Tigers are good enough to win a title, but they're looking a heck of a lot better than they did at Brewster…

Putnam Valley's Billy Reis throws props at goal-scoring Jimmy Van De Veerdonk (9) en route to his first career hat trick Saturday in Tigers' win over Fox Lane.
In a rematch of last year's championship game the Haldane (2-1) softball team came out on the shy end to reining Class C champion Dobbs Ferry once again, losing by a 3-2 count. Blue Devil hurler Chelsea Lisikatos locked horns with Eagles (2-0) hurler Jaqueline Crews, and once again Crews got the better of the Haldane bats, holding the Blue Devils to six hits while whiffing nine. Haldane better figure Crews out in a hurry because chances are the Blue Devils are going to see the Eagles again in early June, quite possibly at North Rockland again in the title tilt if they're lucky/good enough to survive North Salem…

The Putnam Valley baseball team found out first hand Monday afternoon just how good Mahopac's C.J Riefenhauser can be when the crafty lefty fired a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Tigers. Yeah, they were overmatched by one of Section 1's premier hurlers, but give the Tigers (4-3) credit for one thing; stepping up and taking on a challenge from the Class AA powerhouse Indians, one of Section 1's finest programs.

"He was pretty solid, he mixed it up he wasn't over powering," said PV 3B Walter Sherwood of Riefenhauser. "Our defense was there today, just not the offense. Our gloves and defense are going to come around very soon, and when that happens, and we have our bats working as well, were going to string multiple wins together."

I don't think Coach Nats' Tigers have scratched the surface of their potential just yet, but that's just me motivating the only way I know how…

It isn't often that I'll sit down to type about the exploits of a fourth-grader, mostly for fear of putting too much pressure on them, but isn't that what we do here in the media? So every now and again I'll find a reason not to ignore their accomplishments when they deserve recognition, particularly should the fourth grader should be related to me. Putnam Valley's Kevin Gallagher, my nephew and the son of Kevin and Kathleen Gallagher, was recently informed that he was one of seven Putnam Valley's representatives as winners of the Southeastern Zone Elementary Physical Education Award. Other winners include Charlie Pagani, Lauren Crimmins, Justin Tompkins, Stephanie Wagner, Harrison Deegan and Danielle LeFleur, all cited for demonstrating outstanding interests in Physical Education, Sportsmanship, Personal Effort and Total School Community. The honorees will receive their awards at Carmel High School on May 10th.

Again, I don't want to go making a mountain out of a molehill, but if this nephew of mine remains that committed to his civic duty, he's a shoe-in to blow his ol' uncle away in terms of manning up and doing the right thing. Doing the right thing isn't always easy to do, but it's the backbone of our society, and I'd say these seven well-adjusted kids are going to fit in rather well should they continue to make good like that.
