Girl Scout Gold Award Project Honors Putnam Valley Military
by Edward Paul Greiff

Girl Scout Rebecca Bierhoff of Troop 2251 displays plans for a sign to be erected in Town Park with the names of Putnam Valley active military.
"There has not been enough recognition paid to our men and women serving in the military especially the boys and girls who leave Putnam Valley High School to go into the military," said Rebecca Bierhoff of Girl Scout Troop 2251 as she unveiled her Gold Award project before the Putnam Valley Town Board on April 16, 2008. The Gold Award is the Girl Scouts equivalent of the Boy Scouts Eagle award.

Bierhoff is a sophomore at Putnam Valley High School and has been in the Scouts almost all her life and she loves it. Her Gold Award project is called "Adopt a Soldier," and is a sign designed to "recognize active duty military personnel from our town for their hard work and dedication to our country," says Miss Bierhoff. The project also calls for "care packages" to be sent to them so they know they haven't been forgotten.

This is a project of love and caring but it is also a challenge as to how it will be completed. The sign is seven feet high and five feet wide. The 6" by 6" poles supporting the sign will be set in concrete footings three feet deep. The sign will be displayed next to the "Patriot Garden" adjacent to the pavilion in the Town's Leonard Wagner Memorial Town Park. Several years ago Boy Scout Frank Rush Jr. erected the Patriot Garden as part of his Eagle Scout project. Today Frank Rush Jr. is serving in the United States Marines. Assisting Frank in the project was his brother Anthony. Today Anthony Rush is attending Annapolis Military Academy as part of a five-year commitment to the Navy. Rebecca's Adopt a Soldier Project is timely because there are more men and women serving in the military from Putnam Valley than people realize. Her Adopt a Soldier project will be greatly appreciated by not only the men and women whose names end up on the sign but also by their family and friends. Her plans call to have the sign completed this summer and have the unveiling at Town Day in the Park on September 13, 2008.

The names will be gold on black lettering and cost $10 for each name. A suggested donation of $10 per name would help defray the cost of the names, construction, and maintenance. Annually in September the names will be updated with the names of new young men and women from Putnam Valley who are going into the military. It will show pride, support, and recognition of the appreciation of what they are doing.

If you would like to make a donation towards this project, checks made payable to: "Adopt a Soldier GSHH" can be sent to to: Adopt a Soldier, P.O. Box 31, Lake Peekskill, N.Y. 10537. Donations of $100 or more will receive special recognition.
