WIC Celebrates Mother's Day with Party

"Moms are the greatest!" is the theme of a Mother's day celebration to be held at the Women's, Infants & Children's (WIC) Program at 121 Main Street, Brewster on May 6. All WIC clients are invited! The WIC Program offers nutritious foods and infant formula for low-income families. For over 21 years, WIC has delivered nutritional counseling and healthy foods to families during the critical developmental times of pregnancy and early childhood.

The Mother's Day party will run from 10am until 2pm, with a red carnation to be handed out to the first 50 mothers to arrive. Mothers and children are welcome to attend. Healthy foods and refreshments will be served. A WIC Nutritionist will give cooking demonstrations of low-fat dishes for busy moms. Recipes of all dishes served will be handed out for moms to take home.

Guests will enjoy free prizes donated by local merchants such as manicures, pedicures, gym passes, grocery gift cards, movie passes and numerous gift certificates to local restaurants. Donors' names will be announced and displayed on posters during the celebration.

WIC Director, Lorraine Ciaiola, R.D. stated that "the staff wanted the party to honor local mothers as they are the cornerstone for healthy and successful families". Dr. Sherlita Amler, Commissioner of Health, agreed and stated she is an avid supporter of the WIC Program and thought the Mother's Day celebration was a terrific way to honor the moms. Dr. Amler supports WIC because eating patterns are learned during childhood. "Food is more than just nutrition, it reflects our culture," she said. WIC works with families to improve nutrition while remaining culturally sensitive. Parents are educated in order to make better food choices for their children. One of the most important aspects of this program is the teaching that occurs.

The WIC Program is a part of the Putnam County Department of Health with offices located at the Department of Health, 1 Geneva Road, Brewster (845) 278-6678 and 121 Main Street, Brewster (845) 278-9204. Any New York resident is welcome to apply for WIC by calling the above numbers during normal office hours. Applicants will be screened for eligibility for the Program.
