Putnam Valley Arts Hosts its Fourth "Open Mike Night"
On Saturday May 31, 2008 from 7-9:30pm, Putnam Valley Arts will host another Open Mike Night at the Lake Peekskill Community Center.
The arts group, also known as "PV Arts," started these Open Mike Nights in 2003 as a way of paying homage to the famous Night Kitchen in Lake Peekskill, which ran strong from 1973 to 1983. In fact, at the first two Open Mike Night shows, performers from the old Night Kitchen came back to tell stories of the people, the music, the art, and the great home baked desserts that were a part of that coffee house. In keeping with tradition, the Open Mike Night on May 31 will offer coffee and teas, plus some rich desserts gathered from fine bakeries such as Grandmas.
Performers from surrounding areas are welcome to come and perform at Open Mike Night. The admission is a mere $3 - not much more than the old Night Kitchen all those years ago. All types of music are welcomes, as well as poetry, storytelling, comedy, and dramatic readings and performances. A small sound system and mics are provided, though people may bring their own guitar amps and amplified keyboards if they can be quickly set up. The Lake Peekskill Community center is spacious enough for a fairly large audience, with a kitchen at the rear to keep those goodies coming. The event is sponsored by the Lake Peekskill Youth Committee. To get to the Lake Peekskill Community Center, drive north from Oregon Corners on Oscawana Lake Road, and take a left onto Williams Street. At the top of the hill you will see signs for 'Open Mike' at the Community Center on the left. There is a spacious parking area there next to the lake, and parking is free.
