Village of Nelsonville Appoints New Mayor
2008 Budget calls for 3.98% tax rate increase
by Mike Turton

Nelsonville Mayor Tom Corless (center), Trustee Anthony Merante (left) and Trustee Peter Tomann (right) will fill lead the Village in 2008
Tom Corless was sworn in as Mayor of the Village of Nelsonville at the re-organization meeting of the Village Board on Monday, April 21, 2008. Corless had been re-elected as a Village Trustee last fall and was subsequently appointed deputy-mayor. The death of Mayor William Merando earlier this year necessitated the appointment of a new mayor. Trustee Anthony Merante will now serve as deputy mayor. Peter Tomann was appointed to fill the vacant trustee slot. Dennis Zenz will serve a four-year term as Village Justice, having been elected to the position last fall. In other re-organizational moves the three-man village board will act collectively as street commissioner due to a larger-than-usual number of projects that will be carried out on village streets in 2008. Robert Lusardi was reappointed as village attorney and George Duncan will again act as building inspector. Wayne Rudolph will handle duties as parking enforcement officer as well as deputy code enforcement officer. Mayor Corless will be responsible for personnel and emergency services liaison duties. Andy Merante will head up the auditing committee and act as liaison with the Town of Philipstown and the Hudson River Valley Greenway. Rookie Trustee Tomann will take the lead on recreation and building maintenance and will also act as liaison with the Village of Cold Spring. Pauline Minners will continue as village clerk/treasurer, records access officer and court clerk. M&T Bank will again serve as the official bank and The Putnam County News and Recorder will again be the official newspaper for the village.

The Board approved the budget for 2008 which will see the tax rate rise by 3.98%. The current tax rate will increase from $4.91 to $5.11 per thousand dollars of assessed property value. The budget includes total spending of $344,930. Village taxes will account for $227,630 of that total with the balance coming from grants and miscellaneous revenues. Most of the increase is attributed to the cost of improvements to be undertaken on Pearl, Wood, Crown and Pine Streets. The large increase in the cost of fuel costs is also a factor in the budget increase. The tax rate increase for 2008 is 1% less than the increase in last year's budget.

Trustees also discussed repairs to Healy Road which they hope will be undertaken by Putnam County in 2008. The County initiated repairs last year but the quality of the work came under heavy fire from residents and trustees alike. Mayor Corless commented that, "The winter has not been kind" to the road and that it is "in worse shape than before the repairs." Trustee Merante indicated that County Legislators Vinnie Tamagna and Terry Intrary have been assisting the village in dealing with the situation.

In other business, the trustees helped ensure the continuation of a long-standing tradition when they approved a donation of $1000 in support of "Kids' Fishing Day" which is held each spring at the reservoir on Fishkill Road. Sponsored by Nelsonville Fish and Fur, this year's day of free fishing, hot dogs and sodas will be this Sunday, May 4.

The Village of Nelsonville Board will continue meet on the third Monday of each month at 7:30pm. The next meeting will be held Monday, May 19.
