Marie Zarcone Announces Her Candidacy for Putnam Valley School Board
" I love Putnam Valley. I have been a resident of this town since 1970, and I hope to continue my work to make this town better. Our challenge is to raise the bar on our academic standards so that our students reach their full potential while at the same time keeping our taxes affordable. We must have a balance. I believe the key to accomplishing this is to insure that we understand and agree on our priorities. We need to examine our spending. We need to challenge ourselves on those things we are spending money on that many not be adding value to our goals. During a time when the economy is challenging the limits of every family, households start to reevaluate their budgets. Businesses are facing challenges in making profits. Everyone is struggling with the high price of food and fuel. The school district needs to understand that and reevaluate their budgets in the same way. We cannot just do "Business as Usual." These are not usual times. We need to look at everything from our bus usage to our energy usage. We need to examine opportunities to raise money for the "extras" that we want, but can't afford.
"I think our first priority is to deliver the highest level of education to our students. I believe the Board of education, the administration, and the teachers are all accountable to deliver on that promise. Everything else needs to be examined to insure that it is benefiting well beyond its expense.
"This year's school election in Putnam Valley may be the most important school vote in years. In 2010, a new teacher's contract will be negotiated, and if re-elected to the school board, I want to be a part of the negotiation team for the new contract. We must make sure we are true to our goals of quality education that is affordable. I am currently serving as a liaison to our legislature and I am working to help secure a State Bill which would take funding of the schools off of property taxes. I am a proponent of the "no cut" policy in sports, but I feel we need guidelines.
"I have been a resident of Putnam Valley for 38 years. I am a graduate of Hunter College and I have 45 post graduate credits in Guidance and School Administration. I have taught on the Elementary and Secondary level, and have NYS certification.
"I see our school district from both sides; from a parent's position, with family in the schools, and as a taxpayer. I have developed initiatives to create potential revenue streams for the schools to help offset costs.
"My community service spans the 38 years I have been here. I have served on the PV School Board since 2005. I served as a trustee for the Hudson Valley Hospital, Trustee for the PV Library; and a former member of the PV Parks & Rec. I was the first woman to serve on the Putnam County Legislature. I am presently a board member for the Putnam Valley Business Association, and President of the Putnam Valley Senior Club.
"I feel we are at a critical time in Putnam Valley and I would like the opportunity to continue my work; striving for the highest level of academic excellence that if affordable to our residents."
