Discoloration in Village of Cold Spring Water Explained
Hydrant Flush Scheduled

On Tuesday, April 22, many residents dealt with a bout of discoloration at their water taps. Through an investigation of the matter, Superintendent Greg Phillips found that the source of the problem was at the Haldane High School, where a fire suppression contractor was testing the system. As part of the test, the technician opened a valve that doubled the water flow through the distribution mains, which caused the problem. The Water Department has a requirement that all such testing be preceded by notice to the Department.

Wayne Robinson, of the School District, was not aware of the requirement, and apologized for the inconvenience. The President of the sprinkler company was aware of the requirement, but erroneously thought that the School was on it's own water supply, as some others are. Phillips stressed the need for communication: "Coordination of schedules will provide time for notification to our residents, which will allow them to plan around the anticipated discoloration."

Phillips added, "It will also allow flow tests to be scheduled in conjunction with the bi-annual hydrant flushing of the distribution system." In a related matter, the Water Department will be conducting a hydrant flush of the System, beginning Sunday, May 4, through the morning of Friday, May 9. Each night between the hours of 9pm and 4am, residents may experience low water pressure and a period of discoloration. Residents are encouraged to run their cold water until clear.

Any questions, regarding this or other water-related issues should be directed to Mr. Phillips at 265-7986 or via e-mail: vcswater@bestweb.net
