Two-day Celebration Planned for 100th Anniversary of Garrison School's Historic Building
On a joyful Saturday in September, 1908, the Garrison community gathered together to lay the cornerstone for a new school house. The building was made of stone and represented a major step into the future for the tiny Garrison School. Now, that stone building is surrounded by three additions, but its' four original classrooms remain at the heart of the Garrison School and the Garrison Union Free School District.
This September, 2008, there will be a series of celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of this historic building. Members of the celebrations committee want to hear from the public, and hope everyone will participate as much as possible in the goings-on during the 2008- 2009 school year. The committee represents an open and growing group, consisting of current and past students, parents, teachers, staff, administration, and School Board members. They hope more people will become part of their committee, since they are forming subcommittees dedicated to such endeavors as researching the building's history, gathering stories of the School and its people, communicating what is learned through writing, Web sites, video, and an installation in the school building to be called (tentatively) a "Hall of History," and planning events.
Please save the dates of Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27, for special events to be announced later. And, let the committee know if you have any events to suggest. If you have any memorabilia report cards, photographs, autograph books- that you think would enhance the "Hall of History," they would love it if you could send them a copy.
Betty Lou Clune is the Coordinator of this effort. You can contact her at 845-424-3689 x224, or at bclune@gufs.org - or you can stop in to see her in her office! Committee meeting dates are posted on the calendar at www.gufs.org.
