Haldane Baseball Gets Off to a 2-5 start By Matthew Calandrillo
The Blue Devils baseball is looking to have a sectional berth season this year. The Blue Devils head coach is Todd Mensch and assistant coaches include brothers Anthony and Joe Virgadamo. This season really means a lot to Seniors Matthew Calandrillo, Billy Campbell, and Tom Forzano. The Devils also have a lot of newcomers excited to play the next level including freshmen Matt Tringali, Chris Marchese, Elias Lopez, Jackson Zuvic, Will Simone, and Nick Scherer. Returning players for the Blue Devils include sophomore Derek O'Dell, Junior Michael Impellitiere, Junior Will Charkowsky, Junior Conor McCann, sophomore Joe Dullea, sophomore John McGuire, sophomore Christian Callahan, freshman Ryan Kenna, and sophomore Rafael Famighetti.
So far, the Blue Devils have had a rough schedule, but won the games they had to win. After two tough losses to Bronxville and Dobbs ferry, the Devils looked to turn it around against the Valhalla Vikings. Dullea, one of Haldane's hottest hitters, got his first career varsity home run. The Devils also played good defense. Calandrillo pitched the complete game for the Blue Devils but came up short while taking the loss. The Devils lost 4-3.
The Devils' first win of the year would be against the Solomon Schechter Lions. Michael Impellitiere got his first start and pitched solidly, going four innings and grabbing the win. Charkowsky had a career day going 3-4 with 4 RBI and a double. Marchese went 2-4, picking up his first career varsity hits. Jackson Zuvic also got his first career hit. Billy Campbell also had a multi-hit game. The Devils won 17-3. In the next game the Blue Devils had a real tough opponent in the Tuckahoe Tigers. The Devils played the Tigers strong. Joe Dullea stayed hot, hitting a grand slam. Conor McCann RBI'd for the Devils also. The Blue Devils fell short to the Tigers 16-11. After a tough loss to Millbrook in the Millbrook tournament, the Devils would fought for 3rd place in the tournament at Dutchess. The guys were pumped up and ready to play Arlington. Ryan Kenna got the start and pitched phenomenally, going 4 and 2/3 innings, picking up the victory. Freshman Matt Tringali pitched the last two innings and looked amazing, picking up the save. The Devils won and took 3rd place 6-3. The Blue Devils have a big week coming up. On Monday, April 28, (after this article was written) the Devils are scheduled play at home against Rye Neck. On Wednesday the 30th they are at Poughkeepsie and on Friday and Saturday they will be at the Beacon Tournament. Come support the Blue Devils!
