Book Signing at Kent Library Armed Forces Day Exhibit
Uncle Ben, Uncle Bob, Uncle Joe, Uncle Pete, P.D. and Pop. A lengthy and unusual title for a book but one that personalizes the history of one Hudson Valley author's family involvement in World War II.
A box arrived from Arizona at the home of Ralph J. Ferrusi, a Poughkeepsie Journal columnist, in January of 2003. Once he and his wife Kathy opened and began reading its contents, which consisted of the journals, binders, official files and personal correspondence of Kathy's Uncle Ben and Aunt Geri, Ferrusi was compelled to document and record all he could not only of their lives, but the lives of other family members who served overseas in the military during WWII.
Ward Benjamin Meek scribbled in pencil on any piece of paper he could find while he was a prisoner of war. He carefully detailed the minutia of daily existence within a Japanese prison camp; the weather, the meager food, human behavior. Meek's journals serve as the compelling Appendix to Ferrusi's often heart-wrenching book. Notebooks, letters, scrapbooks, diaries and a taped interview contribute to Ferrusi's compilation of the family's war memoirs.
Ferrusi will be at the Kent Public Library from 10 to 11:30am on Sat., May 17 to sign copies of his book. The book signing is part of the library's Armed Forces Day tribute to area service men and women. The temporary exhibit will include correspondence, photographs, awards, banners, media articles and uniforms from any American war. The exhibit will be open from 10am to 3pm.
