Government Closest to Home Not Always the Best Dear Editor:
As they view the pettiness, travail and threatened tax increases in the Village of Cold Spring, Garrison residents can congratulate themselves on the defeat of the proposed Village of Garrison several years ago. Cynical as it may sound, the fact is that government closest to home does not turn out always to be the best.
I am especially proud of the foresight of the Garrison residents who joined the "Just Say No to Village Government Committee" that I founded, with the sub-slogan "It Doesn't Take a Village," partially plagiarizing a Republican and a Democrat first lady. Today Garrison residents can be grateful that they decided to work within the framework of a responsible town government that has been prudent about spending and taxation.
Garrison citizens could further improve their lots in life by convincing the Garrison School Board to surrender its fiefdom and cooperate in a merger with neighboring school districts.
