Retroactive Variances Will Set a Dangerous Precedent
Dear Editor:

I am a member of the Philipstown Citizens Alliance and I think there are a few aspects concerning the CLE gas station/market situation that need clarification.

First, the PCA supports local business, a vital source of taxes and employment (plus, I think we all want our sales taxes to go to Putnam rather than toWestchester or Dutchess county). Second, and most important, is that we believe it is necessary for Philipstown to enforce its various code requirements.

The problem with the CLE facility is the fact that it has been built with few, if any applications and approvals, all of which are required (ie. site plan, zoning variances, septic, environmental, etc).

As the town goes forward with implementing the Comprehensive Plan, and works to maintain the special character of our community, it is vital that development, whether residential or commercial, conforms to its laws, codes and regulations. If the CLE project is granted retroactive variances and approvals, it will set a very dangerous precedent for future development in Philipstown.
