Barbara Crowley

Barbara Crowley, a long time Cortlandt Manor resident, died unexpectedly but peacefully Wednesday at age 78. Mrs. Crowley was a retired Secretary at National Shoe Fair in New York City. She was born in the Bronx on April 3, 1930, the daughter of Edward and Ruth Miller Poons. Barbara was married to James T. Crowley on Sept. 6, 1952 at St. Brendan's Church in the Bronx. Mr. Crowley died in 2005.

Barbara was an avid bowler, participating in many leagues and tournaments throughout the Bronx, Westchester and New York State. She once bowled a 290, which was the highest score ever recorded in a Westchester ladies league. That record held for many, many years.

She is survived by a son Thomas (Patricia), of Warren, OH, daughters Althea (George) Crowley Becker, of Stormville, and Barbara (Peter) Vetoulis, of Cold Spring; also 2 brothers, William (Corrine) Poons, of Fishkill, and Raymond (Madeline) Poons, of San Diego, CA. She also has a sister, Ruth (Jim) Geoghan, of Los Angeles, CA, a daughter-inlaw, Mary Crowley of Buchanan, 10 grandchildren, and 1 great granddaughter.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Crowley is also predeceased by a son James, on April 19, 2008, a grandson, John James Crowley, and a brother, Edward Poons. She was waked at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton-on-Hudson and her Funeral Mass was said at Assumption Church in Peekskill. She was laid to rest at Assumption Cemetery on May 3, 2008.
