Philipstown Knights Celebrate First Victory

The Victorious Philipstown Knights: front row (L-R) - Jordan Erickson, Isabelle Jimenez, Nicole Pidala, Cali Schweikhart, Emma Cunningham, Emma Jacoby, Sara Jacoby and Mackenzie Cunningham. Back Row (L-R) - Tess Hansler, Sonya Kuzminski, Brianna DiFrancesco, Kate Lahey, Emma Garschagen, Alex Monteleone, Sarah Warren and Georgia Dain.
After three tough losses and against division leaders Rye Brook, Manhattan and Harrison, Philipstown's under- 12 girls soccer team came through with an inspiring 4-2 victory over a physical Rye Power squad. Playing their second home game of the season on a beautiful, sunny day at the St. Basil's Academy Field, the Knights battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat a team that hadn't experienced a loss coming into the game.

Brianna DiFrancesco's low, hard shot into the right corner of the goal halfway through the first half not only knotted the game at one, it was the team's first goal of the year. Having put one in the net, the offense seemed to gain confidence and was rewarded less than five minutes later when Kate Lahey's goal gave the team their first lead and a 2-1 halftime advantage.

A series of beautiful passes led to goal by Emma Garschagen early in the second half that stretched the lead to 3-1. Rye, however, continued to battle and put relentless pressure on the Knights' goal. With less than ten minutes to go, Rye cut the lead to one after a scramble in front of the goal. The Knight's defense held strong, leading to a counterattack down the field, and a hard foul in the penalty area. Emma Garschagen calmy drilled the subsequent penalty kick into the upper corner to provide the final margin of victory.

Goaltender Cali Schweikhart made 14 saves in the victory, many of them of spectacular.

This was truly a team victory for the Knights. Every player on the squad made a significant contribution during the course of the game.

Finally, the Knights would also like to thank Monteleone Contracting for their generous donation of team benches to the St. Basil's facility. They are a welcome addition.
