Mahopac Middle School to Host Community Health Fair

Health, safety, and spring cleaning will get a boost at Mahopac Central School District's fourth annual community blood drive and health fair Thursday, May 22, at Mahopac Middle School, from 4 to 7pm.

The fair, with a theme of "Sailing into Health and Wellness," is timed to kick off the Memorial Day weekend with a fun-filled and worthwhile event for all ages. Set up in the Middle School's Cafeteria #1, the fair will include interactive displays and representatives from more than 25 health and human services agencies throughout Westchester and Putnam counties.

Resource officers from the local sheriff's department will offer residents a chance to experience the "Seatbelt Convincer," a specially designed cart-like device that simulates a 5 to 7 mph crash and illustrates the importance of wearing seatbelts at any speed. The officers are also planning to display Child ID Kits.

For spring cleaning, residents can bring their old sneakers to the fair to support the efforts of Nike's "Let Me Play" initiative. Nike accepts old sneakers (any brand) and uses them to create playing spaces, courts, and tracks in the United States and elsewhere. Its motivation is to support conservation and the belief that kids who have opportunities to play are less likely to engage in risky and/ or self-destructive behaviors. (Note: only sneakers will be accepted. No shoes, no metal spikes, or light-up shoes.)

The blood drive will be from 2 to 7pm in Cafeteria #2. Walkins are welcome. Raffles, arts and crafts projects for children and free refreshments are also planned. For more information, contact health fair coordinators Valarie Nierman or Anne Tuite at 845-621- 1330, ext. 475.
