Knights Take Second in a Row, Down Scarsdale 4-1

The Philipstown Knights girls U-12 soccer team celebrated Mother's Day with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Scarsdale Daredevils at the Crossways Field in Scarsdale. The Knights built on the momentum of last week's victory over Rye, scoring a quick goal about ten minutes into the game. Alex Monteleone notched her first goal of the year, on a beautiful left-footed shot that beat the Scarsdale keeper low and into the corner for the early lead. With midfielders Tess Hansler and Emma Garschagen helping to control the middle of the field, forward Sarah Warren tallied her first goal about five minutes later. Warren's rightfooted blast gave the Knights a 2-0 lead, and early control of the game.

Scarsdale, however, kept pressure on the Knights' goal, leading to a score off of a goalmouth scramble, cutting the lead to 2-1. The Daredevils continued to attack the Knights' net for the remainder of the half, but the defense, anchored by the Jacoby sisters, Emma and Sara, Georgia Dain and Jordan Erickson held strong, preserving the halftime lead.

The second half started off much like the end of the first half, with Scarsdale getting a strong push up front, leading to some quality scoring chances. The turning point of the game came with about 15 minutes remaining, when Scarsdale was awarded a penalty kick as a result of a foul in the Knights' penalty area. Goalkeeper Cali Schweikhart, who made 9 saves in the game, ranged to her right to stop the shot, keeping the Knights in front. After collecting the loose ball, Schweikhart quickly distributed the ball up the field, leading to a Knights' counterattack. After pressuring the Daredevils' goal, Brianna DiFrancesco gave the Knights some much-needed breathing room, tallying her second goal of the season on a strong shot from the right side.

Five minutes later, Kate Lahey scored a well-deserved goal to provide the final 4-1 margin. Lahey played a strong game up front, and was rewarded with her second goal of the season, on a low shot into the right corner.

Emma and Mackenzie Cunningham, along with Sonya Kuzminski, Isabel Jimenez and Nicole Pidala, provided valuable offensive and defensive support, covering large parts of the field during the contest.

As the final whistle sounded, the girls celebrated their first road victory of the season, making the ride home a good one for all the team moms (and dads, grandparents, and siblings), who once again provided a tremendous amount of support to the team.

This Sunday, the Knights host the Pelham Tornados at the St. Basil's Academy Field. Game time is 12 noon.
