Nelsonville Man Charged with Assault

Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Village of Nelsonville man for the assault of his ex-girlfriend.

On June 10, 2008 at 5:22pm, while on patrol in the Town of Philipstown, Deputy Sheriff Andrew Kristan was dispatched to respond to the Village of Cold Spring Police Department to take an assault complaint from a female victim. The Cold Spring Police had turned the call over to the Sheriffs Department after they determined that the crime had not occurred within the village limits.

The female victim reported to the deputy that her ex-boyfriend, Jose Beltran, 26, of 334 Main Street, Nelsonville had assaulted her during a dispute over money. While the deputy was interviewing the victim, Village of Cold Spring Police Officer Wahlz initiated a traffic stop of a motorist on Route9D and identified the driver as Mr. Beltran. Officer Wahlz notified the deputy, who responded to the location of the traffic stop and took Mr. Beltran into custody. The deputy charged Mr. Beltran with Assault in the Third Degree, a misdemeanor. The defendant was processed at the Putnam County Sheriff Department Philipstown Substation, arraigned before Town of Philipstown Justice Stephen Tomann and released after posting $180 cash bail. The defendant is scheduled to appear in the Town of Philipstown Justice Court at a later date to answer the charge.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
