Putnam Valley HS PTSA Makes the Most of its Book Fair

Thanks to a number of energetic parent, student, and faculty volunteers, the Putnam Valley High School PTSA held its Barnes & Noble Book Fair from June 3 through June 6, 2008 with innovative programming that added to the appeal of this annual pre-summer event.

On Friday, June 6, a whole evening of music enhanced the shopping experience. Cast members from PVHS TheatreWorks' hit production of West Side Story directed by PVHS drama and choral director, Gerard Micera, performed songs from the musical, including: Maria by Jackson Gilman Forlini (Tony); Tonight by Jackson Gilman Forlini and Michelle Tendy (Maria); Officer Krupke by Zach Flegar (Action), Jimmy Hertzel (Baby John), Mike Byrne (A-Rab), Chris Pittman (Snowboy), Jon Zupan (Diesal), Alix Reed (Gee-tar), Stephen Velichko (Tiger), and Evan Kneuer (Big Deal); and America by Nicole Benvenuti (Anita), Halle Davenport (Consuelo), Emma Kelvas (Rosalia), Kristin Otero (Francisca), Alex Rodriguez (Teresita), Gina Raus (Estella), Heather Valle (Magerita), and Kimberly Christopher (Josephina).

The PTSA also held its June 3 membership meeting in the children's book department with coffee beverages for all. The Barnes & Noble Book Fair is a "painless" fundraising event that encourages participants to do their regular summer reading list, Father's Day, graduation, and vacation book shopping during a specified period of time in June, when Barnes & Noble agrees to donate a percentage of the sales to the PTSA. The higher the sales, the higher the percentage donated. In previous years the PTSA has even purchased books of its own to donate to the high school's classroom libraries.
