Putnam Valley Teacher Barbara Parmly Receives National PTA Lifetime Achievement Award

As current and former students and their parents applauded, the Putnam Valley PTA honored Elementary School teacher Barbara Parmly for her commitment to the youth of Putnam Valley with the National PTA Life Achievement Award, on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008.

The Life Achievement Award is the highest honor a PTA can bestow. It has been in existence since 1899, just two years after the founding of the National PTA, and is designed to pay tribute to those individuals who have given outstanding service to their communities.

Parmly, a teacher for 9 years, has earned a reputation as a dedicated, caring professional, always ready to go the extra mile for her students - and for all students in Putnam Valley.

"One of Barbara Parmly's signature characteristics is her amazingly positive attitude, and her seemingly unending reserve of energy," said Valerie Fitzgerald, newly-elected Board of Education member, and outgoing PTA Co-President.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Barbara Fuchs, Elementary School Principal Jamie Edelman, and Elementary School Assistant Principal Louise Frangella were also on hand for the honor.

"Thank you for everything that you do, Barbara," said Dr. Fuchs.

Parmly, currently a 3rd grade teacher, has served on the Board of Education; was PTA Co-President and a member of countless committees. She is currently Elementary School Liaison, and most recently served as the District Coordinator for the Destination Imagination program.

"Barbara Parmly is incredible - she somehow finds time to attend every Board of Education meeting, all PTA meetings, run the Destination Imagination program and co-captain a team, while always being there for all of her students whenever they need her," said Amanita Duga-Carroll, PTA Co-President. "She really loves children, and has an amazing ability to bring out the best in them."

A longstanding member of the Education Enhancement Committee, Parmly is committed to academic excellence, and has been active in initiatives including Putnam Valley Reads, a volunteer program in partnership with the District that underscores the importance of reading 25 books a year.

More than anything, the parents of former and current Parmly students present at the June 11th ceremony said the thing they value most about Parmly is her compassion for and dedication to their children.

"My son Johnny is in Barbara Parmly's class this year, and I am thrilled beyond words that she is getting this award. He is having the best year with her - she has to be one of the most gifted and dedicated teachers I have ever met," said Kathy Rainieri, parent of one of Parmly's current students.

Parmly lives in Putnam Valley with her husband. She has two grown children.
