Over and over again, the same sentiments were echoed by speakers at The Walden School graduation this week on the Putnam/Northern Westchester campus in Yorktown: "These kids care," one of the senior citizens in attendance said. In fact, during their eighth year at Walden, the students visited senior citizens every Friday at the Senior Nutrition Center in Yorktown Heights to serve up food and conversation to the more than 45 seniors who come there each week.
"I come home to an empty house after this," said one of the seniors in a film taken of the students' experience at the Senior Center, "and it's wonderful to see these kids!"
"It's a great experience," said one of the moving up eighth graders, "it's something everyone should do!"
After poignant speeches by Walden School principal and teachers, the students were awarded diplomas for their achievements.
The eight students moving up from Walden this year are Robert Garcia of Highland Falls, Dana Patterson of Peekskill, Anthony Perez of Peeksill, Edgar Patino of Tarrytown, John Poquette of Hyde Park, Lucas Rodriguez of Putnam Valley, Ryan Sirico Lakeland, and Wesley Southall of Ossining.
