Philipstown 11-12 Little League All-Star Team Wins over Hyde Park
The Philipstown 11-12 All Star Team began the District 17 Tournament traveling to Hyde Park on Sunday. The Team chock full of talent was ready to accept the challenge.
Things started off on a positive note as Drew Ford lead off the top of the first inning with the first of his 3 hits for the day. Kenny Doxey dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line, and after a Hyde Park error, ended on third base as Ford scored for the first Philipstown run. The inning continued as Matt Forlow singled allowing Doxey to score and later scoring himself. At the end of the inning Philipstown lead 3-0.
At the bottom of the first Ryan Koval set the tone for the day striking out Hyde Parks first 2 hitters before allowing a solo home run to Vinnie Oliva but came back to get a ground out for the final out of the inning.
The second inning was highlighted offensively with a single from Steven Zalys however Philipstown was not able to push across any further runs. The defense picked up the pace in the second inning as Drew Ford showed why he patrols center field bringing a Hyde Park home run back into the field for the final out of the inning.
In the third inning Ford singled, Rotando reached on an error, Koval single scoring Ford. Despite a walk to Costigan and 2 Hyde Park errors Philipstown was only to tally 1 run, leaving the bases loaded. In the bottom of the third Koval struck out the first batter before allowing 2 hits. With men on 2nd and third and Hyde Parks big hitters up Koval struck out Oliva and Bixby without surrendering a run.
In the 4th Philipstown batted around taking advantage of 3 Hyde Park errors on hard hit balls by Rotondo, Kaufmann and McCann and walks to Koval, Costigan, Giachinta and Marigliano. In the end scoring 4 more runs, but again leaving the bases loaded.
In the fifth Koval continued to throw strikes, relying heavily on the defense of Matt Forlow and a stellar diving catch in center field by Ford again blanking Hyde Park in the inning. In the final offensive inning for Philipstown, Koval once again worked a walk and Justin Kaufmann delivered a towering 2-run homer to cap Philipstown's scoring. In the bottom of the 6th Ryan Koval was nearing his maximum pitch count and was able to face one last batter striking him out. He was promptly relieved by Kaufmann. As Hyde Park's bats began to heat up they closed the gap after a 3- run homer making the score 10-4. Matt Forlow came in and got the final out of the game with a strike out.
The final score was a result of a total team effort both offensively and defensively as Philipstown played small ball and took advantage of 7 Hyde Park errors with almost everyone in the batting order scoring runs. Timely defense and hitting by Philipstown lead by Drew Ford who went 3 for 4 with a double and scored 2 runs and Justin Kaufmann's late inning 2-run homer followed by a stellar pitching performance by Ryan Koval who went 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits and striking out 9.
Philipstown will next play the City of Poughkeepsie on Tuesday at 5:30 at the North Highlands Field.
