First Bird Tests Positive for West Nile Virus in Putnam
Crow located in Philipstown comes back positive from State Health Department

The Putnam County Health Department received notification from the New York State Department of Health that a crow located in the Town of Philipstown has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first bird that has tested positive for the virus in 2008. Prior to this there were no mosquito or human cases of West Nile virus in Putnam this year.

The Health Department plans to intensify mosquito surveillance and control activities. Larvicide will be applied to catch basins within the immediate vicinity where the infected bird was found. It is important to remember that primary mosquito breeding sites can be found around homes and property. Therefore, residents are urged to inspect areas around their homes and eliminate breeding grounds from their properties by doing the following: ·Remove all standing water; this includes any cups, cans or containers that can hold water. ·Change water in bird-baths frequently. ·Keep pools filtered and chlorinated. ·Keep pool covers free of standing water. ·Remove all discarded tires from property. ·Make sure gutters are cleaned and drain properly.

In addition, personal protection measures should be followed. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors. Application of a mosquito repellent containing DEET (N,N,-diethyl- m-toulamide) should also be considered to prevent mosquito bites. It is important to follow label directions and NEVER allow children to apply DEET products to themselves.

Residents should continue to report sightings of dead birds to the Health Department. Please note that not every bird will be tested. Health Department staff follow specific criteria to determine if a bird will be collected for testing. For more information on the West Nile virus, call the Putnam County Health Department at (845) 278-6130 or visit the Health Department's website at: www.putnamcountyny.com.
