Prentice and DiSarro Re-Elected to Fourth Years as President and Vice President of Garrison Board of Education Second and fourth Wednesdays set for regular Board meetings by Margaret Sternberg
No better testament could be given to Anita Prentice for her leadership during the last three years as President of the Garrison Board of Education than her re-election to a fourth term during the Board's Reorganization Meeting held July 9, 2008. Although not present, Fran DiSarro enjoyed the same support, being re-elected to her fourth year as Vice President of the Board. Incumbent trustees Diana Swinburne and Jim Cannon were both sworn in for their second three-year terms and were later appointed as liaisons to, respectively, Haldane and O'Neill High Schools.
In addition to the Reorganization Meeting, a regular meeting was held and, in an effort to expedite the meetings, many of the annual, numerous, individual housekeeping appointments of the Reorganization Meeting were made as a group, allowing a meeting that had generally run for several hours to be finished in about an hour.
Among the annual appointments, Kristin Bennett Anderson was named Chairperson of the Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Special Education, replacing long-time Chairperson Anne Brennan, who retired. Susan Huetter, appointed the District Treasurer, was also appointed the District Tax Collector.
The Putnam County News and Recorder and The Journal News were appointed the official newspapers, and M&T Bank, T.D. Banknorth and CLASS MBIA were named the official bank depositories.
Girvin & Ferlazzo, P.C. was named the school district's attorney. Dina Mikulewicz was appointed the claims auditor, and Joseph P. Modafferi was appointed the district's internal auditor.
Trustee Swinburne was named the annual meeting delegate for the New York State School Boards Association, while Trustee Carol McCullough was named as alternate as well as the legislative liaison for NYSSBA.
Board members also volunteered for various Board Committee assignments, and while doing so changing previous policy to require that all committees have a school board trustee as either Chair or Co-Chair.
Attending to regular business, President Prentice reported that the 100th Year Celebration Committee was "making good progress." Discussing the range of activities that will take place the weekend of September 26-28, plans include a Friday night cocktail party, a reenactment, dedication of the new pavilion, a non-denominational service on Sunday at St. Philip's Church, where the first Garrison school was established in 1793, and on Saturday a day of family activities, including music, story telling, folk dancing and other activities.
Discussion concerning St. Basil focused on the potential importance of the litigation between Garrison and St. Basil, eliciting a suggestion from Trustee Cannon that, particularly during the summer, updates might be sent to parents through the use of the school newsletter, Currents. The Board thought the idea made sense, and there was some further discussion as to which issue would carry the update on the summary judgment decision (PCN&R July 9, 2008) due to the number of people away during the summer.
The next meeting of the Garrison Board of Education will be Wednesday, August 13, at 7:30 pm. The Reorganization Meeting established the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month as the designated day for the Board of Education meetings.
