A Summer's Worth of Nature Programs at Teatown Reservation
Teatown Reservation, located in Westchester, will be hosting numerous programs at several locations over the summer:
Butterfly Kisses: Saturday, July 19, 1- 2:30pm. Have you ever had a butterfly come to rest on you to take a drink from your skin? Have you watched a butterfly move aside a bee as they jostle for food from a flower? July brings out an abundance of butterflies and other insects in the fields. As you learn about the ecology of the field you might be in for a surprise when a butterfly kisses you! Meet at Cliffdale Meadows at Teatown Lake Reservation. 57 Teatown Road, Croton. A River's Story: The Croton River, Sunday, July 20, Time TBA - tide dependent
Join the expedition as they follow the Croton River from its beginning in the Great Swamp of Patterson to its eventual outlet in the Hudson River. From the tidal waters of Croton Bay to the rapids that block upstream passage the Croton River is a scenic gem. Paddling up the river against the tide and current through high cliffs, get away from it all without going very far at all. Participants must have prior canoeing experience, and will carpool to the put-ins. Bring water, lunch, sunscreen and bug repellent and wear clothes and shoes that can get wet and muddy. Mud-luscious, Saturday, July 26, 10- 11:30am. Knee deep in the pond and what do you get? Mud, glorious mud!! It is home to the many invertebrates that use it as shelter and feeding grounds in Teatown Lake. Investigate the animals that live in it, and have some fun mucking about. Members free, Nonmembers $5. Habitat Safari: Meadow Meander,Sunday July 27, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Can't go on safari this summer? No need to go far to get out in the wild - join a naturalist and explore the wild side of Teatown. During the "safari" we learn to identify common plants and animals that make each habitat unique. Some programs involve hiking distances over moderate terrain. Be prepared to get wet and muddy. Wildflower Island Open House, Saturday, August 2, 10am-2pm. As part of Teatown's 25th Anniversary Celebration for Wildflower Island, there will be an open house when guided 30-45 minute "highlight" tours of the Island will be provided on a continual basis; registration is not required. However, children under 12 years of age will not be permitted on the Island. We encourage all interested individuals to join us in celebrating the anniversary of this treasure by taking advantage of this opportunity to visit the Island and observe the breathtaking beauty of its biodiversity.
