| On Saturday, November 8, 2008, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Teatown Lake Reservation will sponsor their 4th Annual Sustainability Exposition at The Garrison from 9am to 1pm. As always, this event is free and open to the public. This year's theme is Choices for Sustainable Living: We Can Do It! in an effort to highlight ways in which communities can work together to create eco-municipalities. The Land Trust and Teatown are pleased to welcome Ralph Copleman of Sustainable Lawrence, Inc. as this year's featured speaker.
Mr. Copleman is the founding executive director of Sustainable Lawrence, Inc., a nonprofit organization pursuing a comprehensive agenda to transform a diverse New Jersey community of 32,000 residents into an eco-municipality following the principles of the Natural Step framework. Mr. Copleman has been a leading force in organizing this effort and marshaling the energies of hundreds of local citizens in support of it. A sustainability advocate for many years, Mr. Copleman's professional career includes nearly 30 years as a management consultant in which he played important roles facilitating comprehensive change in many complex systems including corporations, health care institutions, and communities. In 2003, he became Co-Director of the Life Quality Alliance of the Delaware Valley, which supports creation of sustainability indicators and region-wide behavior change strategies. In 2008, he was named a Fellow of Rider University's Science & Technology Research Institute. He has lived in Lawrence Township, NJ since 1974.
"Sustainability begins and ends with all of us understanding we are a part of something bigger — that our actions matter on a larger scale. That is why HHLT and Teatown are so pleased to focus on the concept of sustainable communities at this year's Expo." said Andy Chmar, HHLT Executive Director.
Other planned highlights will include a wide variety of exhibits showcasing green technologies and sustainable products as well as subject matter experts and "knowledgeable neighbors" who will be on hand to discuss and provide information on sustainable practices such as: building, energy efficiency, local agricultural, landscaping and gardening, consumer products, biodiversity, and recycling and reuse. There will also be three separate topical breakout workshops, including one designed specifically for teens, as well as an EcoArt program geared for young children featuring the Hudson Valley Materials Exchange Reusea Bus.
Choices for Sustainable Living: You Can Do It! will take place on Saturday, November 8th 9:00am-1:00pm at The Garrison and will be followed by a tour of local homes using sustainable design and practices. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Hudson Highlands Land Trust at 845-424-3358 or visit their website at www.hhlt.org for a complete program schedule.
