Flag Hawks Drop Two

On Sunday October 12 the undefeated flag Philipstown Hawks hosted Beacon and Newburgh in a rare doubleheader. In the first game Philipstown hosted the Beacon Bears who were looking to avenge a loss to Philipstown the previous week. Philipstown won the coin toss and got the ball first. Philipstown had a few cobwebs to shake out but was able to mount a long time-consuming drive in the first half behind the blocking of Riley Johanson, Peter Angelopoulos, Ben Corrado, Conor McMahon and Justin Markey. Philipstown quarterback Tyler Outhouse used his backfield of Brandon Twoguns, Sam Giachinta and Xander Casparian to march the ball down the field. The drive stalled near the 10-yard line however and the Hawks came away with no points.

The defense had its turn next with Matthew Champlin and Andrew Aiston causing all kinds of havoc up front for the Beacon team despite giving up a lot of size. Outhouse and Giachinta capitalized on the strong up front play making some nice flag grabs in the backfield. Twoguns also had a few tackles that prevented scores at the safety position. The game remained scoreless into the second half when Beacon was able to break one on a quarterback keeper and take a 6-0 lead. Philipstown never got back into their flow on offense and suffered their first defeat of the season after a hard fought game.

In the second game of the day the Hawks had an even tougher challenge in taking on the Steelers from Newburgh - the only other undefeated team coming into the day. Philipstown again won the toss but was unable to move the ball on their first possession. Newburgh used its size and speed to score a touchdown on their first set of downs. Right before the half Outhouse and Twoguns took turns at the quarterback position leading the Hawks down the field. The line play of Aiston, Corrado, Champlin and Johanson was able to hold Newburgh at bay. Philipstown marched the ball down to the Newburgh 5-yard line, but time in the half expired with Newburgh having a 6-0 lead. Newburgh started the second half with the ball and quickly made it a 12-0 game. Philipstown got the ball back and was able to pick up some yardage. Angelopoulos played through some pain and along with McMahon pushed the defenders back giving a nice hole for Twoguns to score on a long run up the middle. Outhouse converted the extra point cutting the lead to 12-7. Casparian, Giachinta and Markey did a good job containing the outside against Newburgh on the following possession, however they were able to score on a broken play and convert the extra point making the final score 19-7.

The Hawks look to regroup this weekend when they take on Wappingers.
