Additional Birds Test Positive for West Nile Virus
The Putnam County Department of Health received notification from the New York State Department of Health that two more crows have been laboratory confirmed having the West Nile virus; the birds were located in the Town of Southeast. The Health Department does not identify specific locations. This brings the total to date to eleven birds. There have been no mosquito or human cases of West Nile virus in Putnam this year.
The mosquito season is essentially over now. The Putnam County Health Department will continue to provide updates on positive birds. The Health Department is still encouraging residents to call with dead birds to assist us in tracking the spread of West Nile virus. Please note that not every bird will be tested. Health Department staff follow specific criteria to determine if a bird will be collected for testing.
