Haldane Social Studies Presentation Should Help Voters of the Future Dear Editor:
At this time the question of the election process has been answered but a salient question remains unanswered: How do we decrease the percentage of uninformed voters?
Tonight, Haldane's 5th grade teacher, Mr. Dougherty, will demystify the New York State Social Studies Exam's Data Base Questionaire (DBQ) and its offspring, the Data Base Essay (DBE). I have three children and I have referred to his formula-like approach for 6 years. I look forward to a refresher.
Mr. Dougherty's DBQ formula is succinct and concise. The value of the DBQ/DBE exercise is that the young writer must incorporate data/facts from the provided historic text into an essay format to bolster their opinion.
Remember how Science Lab exercises were lead by the Scientific Methodology? Look where we are today with scientific advancements. It may be that the DBQ/DBE may help the uninformed voter to organize the available data, opine and vote with confidence. I strongly encourage the Haldane community to attend Mr. Dougherty's presentation tonight at 7pm at Haldane.
