Hudson River Essay Contest Solicits Essays from NY State College and HS Students

Mount Saint Mary College invites New York State college and high school students to enter its Hudson River Essay Contest, sponsored by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation.

"As we prepare to mark the 400th anniversary of Hudson's exploration, what better way to celebrate this important New York resource than to invite young people to study and write about it," said Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, Mount president.

Essays must focus on the Hudson River and be a maximum of 1,000 words. While the essay may be creative in style, it must be accurate and based upon research; sources must be referenced in a Works Cited page.

The Mount will award a prize of $500 and a certificate of merit to one college student and one high school student. The two winning essays will be published. The college will invite the authors to present their essays during an honors seminar on the Hudson River Valley in February 2009 at the Mount.

A team of educators, led by Dr. Jerome Wyant, Mount associate dean for curriculum, will judge the entries. Wyant coordinates an honors program on the Hudson River at the college, which overlooks the river.

"A student could describe and evaluate one to three historical periods of the Hudson River Valley, such as the Dutch Colonization period beginning in 1609," said Wyant, "or the ecological development of the river or its legacy to the region and the state."

Entries should be sent to Dr. Jerome Wyant, Hudson River Essay Contest, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY 12550 or wyant@msmc.edu and must be received or postmarked by Dec. 31, 2008. For more details, visit www.msmc.edu.
